Weekly Highlight 8/25-8/31

Sunday August 25th is the Birthday for the National Parks Service. Woodrow Wilson signed them into existence in 1916. This year the National Park Service is 108! I am so grateful for this agency and the beautiful land and animals that they protect.

My family loves visiting National Parks. This summer we were able to visit two, Yellowstone and The Grand Tetons. We saw amazing geological features, beautiful animals and learned more about the history of visitors and settlers. I purchased a travel stamp book to document our trip. You can find it online here.

But we also listened to some amazing podcasts and read some fun books before, during and after our trip. I posted about a young readers guide to Yellowstone on my instagram.

I also have a book about the National Parks of the USA by Kate Sober that I adore.

I love the deep dives into the major parks fauna, flora, and geology. We were able to see so many beautiful animals. This year we plan to hit a couple more National Parks with kids including Pinnacles, Yosemite, and the Redwoods. So grateful to live in a state surrounded by beautiful nature views.

Monday August 26th is National Dog Day

This week I checked out Dog Jokes vs. Cat Jokes written by David Newman and Illustrated by John McNamee. It’s silly and has tons of terrible puns and jokes that kids will totally appreciate. It is a simple way to enjoy the day.

“Why did the dog climb a ladder and bark?” “It wanted to raise the woof.”

Dogs vs. Cats

I also checked out DnDoggos by Scout Underhill and colored by Liana Sposto. It’s a fun graphic novel about a group of dogs playing DnD. I can’t wait for my son to get into DnD, but until then I will just strategically leave books out for him to read.

Tuesday August 27th is World Rock Paper Scissors Day

If you haven’t read this book by Drew Daywalt and Adam Rex, you’re missing out.

Wednesday August 28th is famous for the “I Have A Dream” Speech delivered in 1963

I love this beautiful illustrated version of that speech by Kadir Nelson

Thursday August 29th is the day Hurricane Katrina hit land in 2005.

My kids love the I Survived Series and they love the graphic novel versions just as much. Lauren Tarshis has great resources on her website for here free.

Friday August 30th is Toasted Marshmallow Day. I can’t wait to share this book with my kiddos with some s’mores of course.

Saturday August 31st is Trail Mix Day. I hope to get out on a hike with my kiddos and share some homemade trail mix. What do you put in your trail mix?
